Review of Last Sunday’s message:

The key to living a life of consistent victory & Manifesting Christlikeness is to ‘Walk in The Spirit’

The Holy Spirit enables and leads us to live an overcoming life.

Galatians 5:16
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Walk in the Spirit results in us bearing the fruit of the Spirit or being Christ-like.

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Today’s sermon – Led by the Spirit

This new life that is brought about by the Holy Spirit impacts us in 2 core areas –
  • Identity – answers the question ‘Who am I?’
  • Purpose – answers the question ‘What am I here for? Where am I heading to?’
Philippians 3:12
12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.

The Lord Jesus gives our life meaning and purpose - ‘that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me’

Ephesians 2:10
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

The Holy Spirit reveals the purposes of God to us.
1 Corinthians 2:9-10
9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

The Holy Spirit indwells us and leads us.

Romans 8:14-16
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God

Notice that the Holy Spirit bears witness with ‘our spirit’.
The Holy Spirit speaks to us in our spirit.

It is important for us to recognize the leading of the Spirit in our spirit to be able to follow/obey the leading of the Holy Spirit.
We need to be able to hear & understand what the Holy Spirit is saying in our spirit in
order to be able to carry out His instruction.

In other words we need to become more spirit conscious.
We need to become more aware of what we are sensing in our spirit about what the
Holy Spirit is saying.

Every believer has the ability to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in his/her spirit.

John 10:27
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

John 15:26
He will testify of me

spirit-soul -body

1 Thessalonians 5:23
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole

spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Spirit – the inward man (2 Cor 4:16), heart (1 Pet 3:4), the eternal part of us.
Soul – the mind, emotions, intellect - the psychological part of us – renewed or carnal.
Body – the outer man, the physical part of us.

As born again believers, we became new creations in our spirit.
Our soul needs to be renewed.
We live in a body.

(The following section is adapted from Chapter 9 –Hearing from the Holy Spirit of the book ‘Understanding the Prophetic’ -written by Ps. Ashish Raichur)

Physical senses & spirit senses

We are well aware of our 5 physical senses – feeling, seeing, hearing, smell, taste.

Hearing From The Spirit

When we study the scriptures, we see a parallel to these in the spirit realm as well.

5 spirit senses

1. Feeling
-Joy, quietness, peace, restlessness, uneasiness, motivation to action
-These can be temporary or continue for a time
-The Holy Spirit is communicating something to us with each feeling

Peace
Colossians 3:15
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
(Rule – be the umpire)

Stirred, provoked in the spirit
Acts 17:16-17
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols. 17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.

Compelled by the Spirit
Acts 18:5
5 When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.

2. Seeing
-Pictures – great forms of communication, worth a thousand words.
-Still pictures, sequences (movie)
-These need to be accurately interpreted.
-dreams, visions, trances, seeing in the spirit realm

Dreams
Job 33:14-17
14 For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds,16 Then He opens the ears of men, And seals their instruction. 17 In order to turn man from his deed, And conceal pride from man

Trance
Acts 10:9-17
9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened and an object like
a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” 16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.17 Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate.

Seeing in the Spirit realm
2 Kings 6:15-17
15 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”16 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

3. Hearing
Normally, not audible to our physical ears but word(s), sentences, paragraphs,
supernaturally imparted to our spirit.
- a word, sentence
-a flash of information
-a knowing
-an impression
-an inner witness, an inner voice
-sometimes an actual audible voice for the intended audience.. but those standing
alongside don’t hear (Samuel, Saul)

4. Taste
Ezekiel – Eze 3:2,3
-spiritual experience – scroll given, he eats it and it tasted like honey.

5. Smell - 2 Corinthians 2:16 - ‘aroma of death’ & ‘aroma of life’
Revelation 5:8 - ‘incense’ – prayers of the saints

Training our spirit
(5 spirit senses need not work in isolation but in combination)
Our spirit senses need to be trained to learn to listen, be sensitive to and receive from the Holy Spirit – Intimacy with God.

Hebrews 5:13-14
13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
(senses – organs of perception)

1. Be in the Word – read, meditate. Let the Word dwell richly.
2. Obey the Word (not just a forgetful hearer) – James 1:22
3. Our mind – renewed to the Word – to validate and accurately process what we receive in our spirit.
4. Pray in the Spirit.

Testing the leading

1. The Spirit and the Word agree
1 John 5:7
7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

2. Jesus is glorified
John 16:13-14
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

3. It is righteous
Psalm 23:3
3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

4. Other mature believers bear witness to it – 2 Cor 13:1; Deut 19:15

Things that hinder us from hearing

From the parable of the sower
– Mark 4:17 – Stony ground – tribulation, persecution for the sake of the Word
– Mark 4:19 – Thorns - Cares of the world, deceitfulness of riches, desires for other things choke the Word

Conclusion

1 kings 19:11,12
God instructs Elijah to go out and stand on the mountain.
-The Lord was not in the wind, the earthquake, the fire.
- God spoke to Elijah in the still small voice.

God uses our spirit-senses to speak in pictures, feelings, simple words.
Let’s not miss the supernatural while looking for the spectacular!

Let’s be open and sensitive to be led by the Spirit into the purposes of God!
